Banteay Meanchey Province : Preah Netre Preah Mountain
On the top of Preah Net Preah Mountain, there is an ancient temple built during the Angkor period, where many inscriptions were found. The inscription is about a family that came to organize and reorganize the monastery here in 949 of the Christian era after the damage was completely gone. The monastery at that time seemed to be a building for the residence of important practitioners and organizers of various religious ceremonies, such as monks (saints), etc. The monastery was also a shrine (Prasat Tamkal Tep), a place to study various religious disciplines, and the residence of the ruler (saints) there. Today, there is an entrance gate that says "Asram Phnom Arikan" and on it there are many new buildings built of cement. The locals who live around it still call this shrine the monastery. Phnom Net Preah Mountain is located on a small mountain called Phnom Net Preah in Chup Wari Commune, Preah Net Preah District, Banteay Meanchey Province. This mountain is located alone near the northern plain of the Tonle Sap River. If we examine or observe the distance in any direction, we will see that this mountain is shaped like an eyeball, standing out from the long rice fields, which is why the locals call it Phnom Preah Net Preah. However, this name may have originated in the later or medieval period and the original name of this mountain is still not agreed upon by researchers, although there are some inscriptions that mention the construction of a temple on the back of this mountain.
